Once you approach this design region, the transition gets a bit problematic. One easy way is to have different resistance values on the top, so you can lower the resistance a bit at the beginning and raise it up once you've passed the start of the design region. The MOSFET will be rated for 5 volts, and the MOSFETs for this rating are quite robust. They're often used as a voltage divider in level shifters for lower voltages, for example. The gate voltage is then found by dividing the 5 volts by the 50-ohm resistor, and the diode's forward voltage is about 0.7 volts. We'll assume it is, so the gate voltage is 3.3 volts.
